Materials
We believe that the quality of raw materials is vital
to the quality of the finished product and affects the enjoyment you get
from them. While it is possible to make Adirondack chairs from cheap pine
this timber has a very limited life in the UK climate. That is why we use
more durable hardwoods which offer you a chance to purchase a chair that
will give pleasure for many years.
To ensure that you get beautiful furniture which lasts
a lifetime we use selected timber, fixings and finishes. All our timbers are selected to be durable in the UK
climate and each has it's own special characteristics.
We use three main timbers which are, in order of
popularity,
Oak,
Iroko,
Western Red Cedar
General Description
Oak has been used for
building durable structures in the British climate for as long as you can
imagine.
It is naturally resistant to
decay and attack by insects and will last for many years with very
little maintenance.
Traditionally used as a
construction timber for both buildings and boats, Oak is also an ideal
timber for outdoor furniture.
Most of the Oak that we use
originates in France, where the timber industry is strongly regulated and
has excellent environmental controls. (Details)

General Description
Iroko is a West African
hardwood with characteristics which make it ideal for use in the British
climate.
It is naturally resistant to
decay and attack by insects which means that it should last for many
years with very little maintenance.
Traditionally used for ship
and boat building it is a popular alternative to Teak.

General Description
Cedar is a traditional
timber for the construction of Adirondack furniture. We use quality
Western Red Cedar. This range is also significantly lighter than our other
timbers making it ideal where portability is required.
Colour
New Cedar displays a range
of colours from chocolate brown to salmon pink. Untreated it will weather
to an attractive silver grey colour in about 12 months. The only
maintenance then required is an annual clean with warm water and mild
detergent.

Other Materials
Timber is an
obviously important part of the strength of the furniture we provide but
the selection of other materials is equally vital to achieving comfort,
durability and style
Fasteners - We use fixings which
are naturally resistant to the effects of weather which means
stainless steel.
Glue
- We use very little glue in the construction of our furniture and where
we do use it we select high quality water proof grades.
Because wood is a natural material we cannot always
control the exact colour of any piece. Where colour variation exists
we try to select matching timbers to ensure excellent appearance of each
piece but any colour renditions on this site can only be a guide. |
